Their house had vines growing on its side and some of their windows were covered with wooden panels. Evelyn went back inside of the house and put a white tablecloth over her head, made two eye holes and became a ghost for Halloween. She opened the creaking door and said, “Bye, I’ll be back in 2 hours!”

Her mom said, “Be safe out there, you never know what could happen!”

Evelyn answered by saying, “Ok I’m going to be with my friends anyway, so I’ll be fine” and then she grabbed her pillowcase and went with her friends out to the neighborhood streets.

After about 66 minutes of knocking on people’s doors and getting candy from strangers, Evelyn and her friends passed by this unordinary house. It had vines growing on it everywhere, cracked windows that were covered by rotted out wood panels, and a door that was from the 1800’s. They also saw dark mysterious woods in the distance.

“Hey Evelyn, I bet you can’t survive in the woods over there” her friend Emile said.
“What I’m not doing that!” Evelyn exclaimed.

“Oh, are you scared?” Emile teased.

“Fine, I’ll do it!” Evelyn said

As Evelyn walked into the woods, she felt a chill up her spine. The woods had cobwebs in between the trees. She noticed some other things but then she noticed footsteps on the muddy ground. Has someone been here before? Evelyn wondered.

“Hello? Is anyone here?” Evelyn asked

Evelyn lifted up her costume to breathe. Then something grabbed her, a black leather glove covered her mouth. She started to scream, but no one heard her and then the last thing she saw was a round piece of glass before she disappeared.

“Where is she? There’s no way that she can survive there!” Emile said

“I’m going to tell her mom about this” Evelyn’s other friend, Amy, said.

Evelyn’s friends walked down the gravel street to Evelyn’s mom’s house.

“Evelyn went into the woods near that house over there, and we called her name out, but she didn’t answer,” Amy said.

“Well maybe she went far in the woods so maybe we can look around for her” Evelyn’s mom said
They looked all around the creepy forest, but they couldn’t find her. The only thing they could find was her white tablecloth that had blood red splatters all over it and a round piece of glass.

Evelyn’s mom started sobbing because Evelyn was dead.

Evelyn’s mom went on google and searched for detectives. She found one detective who stood out to her “Detective Adam”. She called him and hired him to find out who killed Evelyn.

When Detective Adam came to Evelyn’s house Evelyn’s mom noticed that his magnifying glass was missing the round piece of glass which he would use to look for details so that was weird. Evelyn’s mom gives the bag of the white tablecloth and the round piece of glass. Detective Adam Swifty grabs the bag and then he said

“I’ll be back tomorrow with the information about your daughter.”

The next day Detective Adam comes and says, “I couldn’t find any information about your daughter and the piece of glass gone missing.”

Evelyn’s mom notices that there was glass in the magnifying glass where it was empty yesterday and she thought that it was weird. While worrying about the detective and other misfortunes in her life, it became November sooner than she realized. It was time to throw out the Jack O’ Lantern her sweet daughter carved.

She goes out of the house and sees the Jack O’Lantern: it had decayed to a yellowish- orange color. She opens the top to get the light out of the jack o’lantern. When she pulls it out, there was blood on her hand and a note saying:
“It’s the detective mom.”

(Arya Poudel, 7th grade)

On Halloween night underneath the wind on thirteenth street a mother and a daughter are making a jack-o-lantern. “Now Evelyn, let’s put the light in the jack o’ lantern together and we will use this light every year unless something happens- “Mom, don’t worry I’ll be fine, I’m going with my friends!” Or so they […]

[5,8

post-4744","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-english","category-youth-corner
["GET
